Vendetta
Vendetta Online is a massively multiplayer game, which will permit thousands of players to interact as the pilots of spaceships in a vast, persistent universe. Users may build their characters in any direction they desire, becoming rich captains of industry, military heros, or outlaws. A fast-paced, realtime "twitch" style combat model gives intense action, coupled with the backdrop of RPG gameplay in a massive online galaxy. Three major player factions form a delicate balance of power, with several NPC sub-factions creating situations of economic struggle, political intrigue and conflict. The completely persistent universe and detailed storyline add to the depth of immersion, resulting in a unique online experience.
The game has a free, no-strings-attached trial period, with no personal information or credit card required. Subscriptions start at less than $7 a month for larger prepaid time blocks, or $9.99 monthly.

With all the big names having 2 to 4 week trials, or going completely F2P now, if you really only have an 8 hour trial, it might be time to rethink that plan if you want your user base to grow.
In my opinion, the lack of content ( NPCs, missions, ships/equipment ) is not reason why this game is boring, but rather the lack of incentive for player interaction. For the couple of months that I was subscribed, there were actually quite a few players online and active at all times, but there was very little reason to interact with other players, except in doing certain missions which were still just about as fun as the single player missions even though they required multiple players
The only meaningful player interaction that I found were three situations:
1. Pirates that would harass you in a certain sector and demanded payment for your safety
2. One of players I met would sell and deliver certain hard to acquire/expensive equipment for a small profit
3. Other players can operate the turret guns on your ship allowing your ship to fire at your enemies while escaping. Although this feature was still fairly crude when I was playing ( very hard for the turret gunner to aim, especially if the pilot was lagging any, poor selection of turret guns, hard to find a willing turret gunner, since he had very little reason to operate your turret guns for you )
Other than that, it was a very nice single player game until all of the content had been exhausted.
The last I heard, there was talk of player captureable stations, which would be a step in the right direction assuming there was a compelling reason to own a station ( other than just for prestige or convenience )
For whatever it's worth, we are continually improving the game with every weekly release. We're currently in the midst of re-working some early level content (NPCs, enemies, missions) to make things more engaging for new users. We also read and act on player feedback submitted through our Suggestions Forum.
I have to say I agree with you. I was hoping for something with the staying power of Frontier (Elite II) only multiplayer, but after one month's subscription I cancelled cos this just ain't it.

There's a reason the trial is only 8 hours long; that's all the time it takes to experience the content in Vendetta Online.

What happens to turret gunners when the pilot docks somewhere? Do you get stuck flying a bus back to your nearest ship?

I did play this for a short time, and while the implementation of the game itself is great (i.e. the combat system and other gameplay aspects), there just -weren't- enough people playing it. The fees for this game are pretty modest, but the whole point of playing a MMORPG are those two M's - massively multiplayer. The more people online the better, and Vendetta unfortunately just doesn't have many.
It's too bad, as the game itself can be quite fun, and the graphics impressed me when I first played it a lot more than I expected they would.
Which just game me an idea. The game should factor in mass, affected by payloads and ship parts, when calculating the maximum speed of a spacecraft. If you're being attacked by faster enemies it would be nice to have the option of dropping one's payloads or heavier parts in order to escape faster.
"The only weird part - you still have a maximum speed, and flying consistently forward will reduce your other vectors in favor of your thrust vector (rather than adding). But this is good, otherwise you would have people flying around willy-nilly impossible to see, let alone shoot."
Keep in mind that as an object in space accelerates its mass increases. In order to keep moving faster either thrust must increase (more powerful engine) or mass must decrease (dropping payload or ship parts).
It's not a matter of keeping the game playable by limiting a player's abilities, having a maximum speed in the game is actually closer to real physics than you think.
Yes, absolutely - players on other teams will try to kill you, but they will also help newbies out if you have any questions or need directions to a battle.
Yes, but even back in the beta (prior to being pay-for with a trial) there was an option to enable "advanced" controls that would put you in an inertial mode. Granted, it's not pointed out very hard but it is VERY nice to use. I generally use my joystick POV-hat for up/down/left/right thrust, with my throttle controlling forward/reverse.
The only weird part - you still have a maximum speed, and flying consistently forward will reduce your other vectors in favor of your thrust vector (rather than adding). But this is good, otherwise you would have people flying around willy-nilly impossible to see, let alone shoot.

I tried this on a free trial long ago, I seem to remember that the physics model was like travelling underwater or something like EVE. Is it still this way? Or have they made a more realistic space physics model? Once you've played more realistic physics (I-War, Babylon 5, Elite) it is difficult to go back.

It's OK for about a month, then you wonder what you're paying for. Having other people really isn't that much more interesting, and on the whole I found Frontier and First Encounters (using JJFFE) to be more involving and more fun.
That said, I'm not really one for MMORPG's. I just can't see the point in them. If you DO like MMORPGs then you'll probably like this one.
One thing I would say is that the community are very friendly.

I just started playing this game, and it really is just fun to play. They have clients for Linux, OS X, and Windows. Best part is, you have 8 hours of actual game time online to try it out for free. When you first start it's a tad boring, since you go though some training missions to acquaint yourself with the controls and such. The back story on the game is interesting, and worth reading.
I'm running Kubuntu 7.10 on a AMD 1.6 MHz, 512MB, Nvida FX5500 "while" also running Compiz Fusion w/KDE and it works good. The download is a .bin file, so you'll have to chmod +x "filename" and then ./"filename" to run the installer. (minus the quotes) It will install into your /home/username directory.
One thing I'm disappointed in is the lack of online players. I've only seen around 40 or so, but hopefully more people will give it a try. Prices after the free 8 hours are $9.99 a month with discounts for 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. (not affiliated with Vendetta, just a happy customer) Go ahead and give it a try, and hope to see you online.
Wow, 5-30 players? That's kinda low. Are there live stats for the game, anywhere?

I would give this 3.5/5 only because the lack of users on, at any given time there is only between 5-30 users. I like playing MMO's to play computers.
There are things you have to earn such as weapons and ships, but you can get them elsewhere. You can level your stats up fairly quickly, and with the exception of ships, you can buy and use anything you want from anywhere as long as you equip it at a pirate (corvus) station.
There is an increadble dynamic to this pirate/anti-pirate thing. Its difficult to describe but when I had first started playing I went down to Corvus to get a better ship after hearing about it, and was attacked by a pirate, annoyed i was complaning about it on the general channel (100) and was quickly rescued by 10+ anti-pirate pilots (guilds, and indapendant pilots) the pirate not to be outdone recruted 5 other people to help him.... I started a battle that lasted over an hour and while I wasnt good enough to participate i did take a few shots here n there :)
This game is more about people and personal skill then about stats. Know whos who (like Yoda is a pirate) and know how to use your ship and you will have a blast.
Your going to want to change your keys around when you start if your going to use a mouse, but first learn the defaults, write a few scripts bind them to some keys, and your all set....

Incredible game, as an elite fan of old, it plays just like elite with other people in, and is the only MMO that ever got me even considering paying a monthly subscription.
Hi yoda just kidin dude I nows its old was just seeing if ya was out there to easy just to email so I thort ad leave ya sumint to replay to see ya on msm but no 1 at home … enyways how ya doing not see ya in agers dude how the chat line going ? :P VENDETTA DUZ ROCKS just not had a lot of time to play and yoda rocks at the game...
Considering you just dug up a year-and-a-half-old comment solely to make a snotty, juvenile remark, I think you're more in need of a life.
Oh, and thanks for making me go through a couple of pages to figure out where the new comment was. Dink.
Been playing this game for a lil more than 2 years now (since beta), and I've never been more satisfied with the game.
It has a ways to go to be sure. But its a neverending process, I think the devs will keep updating this one as long as they possibly can.
The Community is close, and there is a great deal of interaction with the developers, who now seem to have pushed their game into overdrive and are startin to ease it out onto the freeway.
The fighting is intense, with whole schools of fighting emerging. Skills are something that you learn, rather than something that you earn. And there are a wealth of them.
Prometheus with Gatling Turret and dual Sunflares coming at you?
You're flying a Corvus Vulturious with just a pair of neutron blasters?
Charge in! When you see them line up to let fly rockets, switch into Physics mode (like sliding on Ice) slide above their rockets, kick back into Flight assist mode, and use the centripetal force to spin around them. All the while, emptying a full battery of neutron fire into their hull....
Like I said... addictive.

If you're wondering whether or not to try it, stop now. They have a free eight hour trial. It counts how much time you've played total, so you can use that trial over several days or weeks.
The game is fun, and it provides incentives for experienced users to mentor new players, so if you're having problems starting out someone will help!
I first played this game in 2002, and believe me it has improved A LOT. I'm only giving it 4 out of 5 stars, though. I think the UI has room for improvement and the controls are a bit difficult to understand at first.
Go play it!

Vendetta online is a rapidly developing and very addicting First Person RPG+Shooter+..., (that's the best why to describe it) with a dedicated playerbase and even more dedicated developers. Until you try it, you don't know what your missing, and once you try it, you won't even miss real life.

Sad thing is I still play! As someone who got to see this game in develpoment at a pretty early stage, my opinion is probably biased, but one of the things that hooks me still today is both the community, and the developer involvement with the community.
It also lets us kick the snot out of Doze and Mac users too!
Oh yah, and if you are having trouble downloading/installing, don't be afraid to ask in the forums, they are usually a helpfull bunch (with one or two exceptions, as with every forum) and will usually know a wway to sort stuff out for you :)

I'm playing this gaame for some months now. There's still work to do but the game is ready for mainstream.
The community is still not *massive* but we are a very nice bunch.
The playability is great and the users have a hugh freedom to do what they want.
So there's also a lot of freedom for 'private' iniciative and many players patrocinates their own events such as the famous weekly Deneb race, bus warz (massive fighting in stock newby ships w/o rules), station wars and the like with attractive rewards for winners.
The way of playing and fighting is very different as in similar games like EVE online as it's you who does everything (flying, shooting...).
From a technical point of view the game is very neat: able to run decently even on 350 PII and performing very good on mi humble Duron. For me this is one of the best things of the game. It runs specilly good on powerbooks and all sorts of macs, even on less powerfull ebooks G3 and G4, and it's said to be killer on G5 with Tiger. The grafix are nice at low detail levels and impressing at a high level.
Drawbacks:
Lack of server infrastructure makes that in some cases the 'lag' does playing relatively difficult. It's not the packet's roundtrip time but the fact that the server honours first the first packages to arrive, so that players with a higher roundtrip will have to wait until the server executes their commands and sends back the position and colision data. This makes that fighting against AI bots becomes very difficult and expensive for players with higher ping rates.
Another (not very seriuos) 'drawback' is the inconsistance of the backstory with the in-game social dynamics. But that's something nobody can help: We are human and establish our own rules. This has made that the 'nationalist' background is indeed not taken very seriusly and players minds their own bussines, have their own friends and foes and generally do what we want. The fact is that this is indeed an advantage as you aren't restricted to rigid rules.
Bascially; It's a technically fine game able to run very nicely on all three architectures: MacOS X, Linux/PC and Mac and Windows, even on less powerfull machines. Gives the player a lot of freedom and has already a very mature but relativley small community, which IMHO is one of the most atracting "features" of the game.
See you in-game, ask fo Larry LeBeuf, Concil of the Cargo Liberation Movement, Yarrr!

This game is well worth the cost of entry. It features a great engine, lots of interesting challenges, good interface, and generally positive players. Don't miss it.
To show how good this game can be, this is a lil something all players were asked to do on the forums at vendetta-online by another member, basically, write a short profile about yourself, with a backstory, well, i cant link to the forums as you have to be a registered member (and it does cost a lil cash these days to stay a registered user, but its less that a couple of beers a week, heh) just thought id share it =D stay kool all

Birthplace: Unknown, found in Odia M-14
Background info: Yoda(of.BORG)™ does not remember how he got to Odia, and no memory of before he arrived. One thing he does remember though, was it had something to do with a mushroom.
After being in a bar brawl with a UIT trader, and stealing his first ship, Yoda(of.BORG)™ set a course for Azek (as it was plotted in the nav com anyway) where he pirated the UIT people alone, and with his first guild affiliation, the Cargo Liberation Movement.
Once word spread of the CLM, the pirates had no choice but to go underground and disband, and again, Yoda(of.BORG)™ flew solo. After meeting a fellow Serco again in space, and hearing tales of the Itani people yet again terrorising the peacefull Serco transports, he decided to leave the UIT territories, and concentrate (mainly) on the war flying as a pilot for the Serco Armed Force, but after a while he finds himself longing for more.
Because he remembers very little of his former Serconian life, he finds it hard to follow all orders given to him, and being a pirate at heart (at least as far as he remembers) he decided the military was not for him. AWOL is not something Serco can do easily, but he knows he must, so he again flys alone.
*Strange voices in his head saying - "Remember Lady Serco, and all her greatness"*
------------------------
An EX CLM (it does not exist now) member that I had great fun pirating with, fighting against, and eventually blowing up (although he was in an ec-88 ) who wrote a short story about his life as an Itani.
I was born to fly. Everything I knew of myself felt lighter than the world I was born into. It buoyed me into the heavens.
Though the life from before still molded my chains, I did not feel them yet.
I grew in a city. Though, unlike many cities, its attachment to nature was omnipresent.
My childhood home lay on the edge of one of the borders, a wall of trees and life lay on one side, with the expanse of the residential neighborhood on the other. The final resting place of my parents, who of course, like most itani, found this a place of peace, and retirement.
It was valuable, not as itself, but as an absence of clutter, a place from which they could leap to their own personal enlightenment.
To me, it was flowing, alive in itself. Though, much to the chagrin of my parents, I concentrated too hard on its simple beauty, and hampered my ability to align my mental focus.
Lacking the mental fortitude to join the local abbey. I chose to seek my alignment elsewhere, and managed to convince the enlistment representative that despite my marginal ability to achieve the one-ness with my ship, I had ability to keep up.
And so began my life as a soldier and combat pilot.
Combat pilots in itani culture, are a bit like the executioners of a society that condemns capital punishment. Officially, everyone wishes they didn't exist, and yet they still cling to the sentence.
I spent a few months in training, fighting hivequeen runoff and developing a spirit of comradery with my toonmates. Though, I was a bit unique in my background. Most excelled at their respective abbeys, and were here to protect that. I instead was looking for something else. Despite their cultivated natures, they could not respect my search, since I appeared to be blind to the wealth of knowledge available. Though one friend, callsign flea, noted for his infinite patience, would always sit and listen.
This lonely environment was maintained up until I finally was given command of a true fighter, a Border Guardian Centurion and sent to the front. We traveled in convoy, protecting some head of state, whose name we weren't privy to.
Us new recruits played scouts, keeping our eyes open for the wink of a warpgate. It was not particularly complicated, and most used the opportunity to practice with their weps, weaving in and out, trying to replace anxiety with pattern. I mock-dueled flea, watching the way he moved, trying to stay ahead of him.
It was in this simple game that I realized my way of fighting. It wasn't a realization that the monks had ever spoken of. Suddenly, my mind went blank, every movement and command, flowed in and out, my mind was a sieve. I wasn't thinking about where he was going, it was just reaction. My fear melted.
I woke up to flea's communication.
"Shape, what WAS that? You moved like we do, what happened?"
I just thanked him and cut communication, I didn't want to corrupt the moment.
This is a great game, what makes it so kool? you forge your own story... heh

Vendetta is now out of beta. It totally rocks, and will continue to improve, especially as more players join - player interaction is a huge part of the game. Highly recommended.
Yeah, they have to build up a greater world/quests/etc. and the they might charge us, but... leave also free access! (let's say for a period of week or two) - it's better to hunt newbies instead of drones! :)
I posted this negative review months ago, and the game has gone through major changes, I is without doubt IMHO one of the most ambitious and fun games available for linux. Disregard my bad review as it in no way accurately refelects the game.
Vendetta trully rocks.
As of the 3.5 update, many things are better. For instance, instead of just 18 (well...25 if you count sectors 40-45 and sector 0) sectors, there are now over 7,000. Of course, many of those sectors are utterly empty (as in real space) and others are chock full of asteroids, and other space-like things. Also with the 3.5 update the new chat system is implemented, meaning no more verbal abuse by people who are more than 3,000 meters away from you. And, of course, there are new variants of ships now. It's coming along quite nicely, especially since Guild now has a publisher! Woo! Keep up the good work, Guild.
red cactus
It's a product in development, which goes through massive changes every major version revision. The test game is available for free, and even says on the download page that it's only an engine test, and "please do not make judgements of our final product based on what you see in the Test". It's a little unfair to pass judgement on a game that isn't yet completed. If you don't like it now, check back in a couple of months and see what's changed.
Windows supports Vertex and Pixel Shaders, which are only supported in Linux (experimentally) on NVIDIA GeForce FX series and ATi Radeon 9200+ series graphics cards. Windows also supports more sophisticated bumpmapping (EMBM vs DOT3)
Come back in, say, a month from the time of this post. The mission system is implimented now, but slightly broken... Once that and the faction system come into play, it'll be great.
BTW: You can also kill NPCs, capital ships, cap the flag or just chat in the pretty IRC channel...
It used to, but the devs removed support because nobody (literally) used it and it was a hassle to maintain. Personally, I'm holding out for BeOS support. :P
You will play this game from Guild software for about a week then you will hate it. Everyone else does.
This game is a non-stop frag fest, there is no point in playing. You will be hunted down and destroyed constantly by the angry unemployed adults who camp out on the game.
I highly recomend that you do yourself a favour and pass this one over.
Guild softwares product is the pits and doomed to failure, nobody will ever pay for that crap.

The idea of the game is great. The interest may suffer from from the fact it's only a test base, but it's a very good start.

I played this solidly (>10 hrs a day) for about 5 days. It will be superb if it turns into a MMOG, at the moment its not really worth it though.
Pros:
Great graphics
Some really good dogfighting
Good network play, despite number of players and single server
Decent range of ships and weapons
Trading system has promise, plenty of different things to carry
The bigger multiperson ships sound inspirational, and the cap ship does look awesome
Cons:
Frag-fest where you continually lose money at the moment
Not enough things to do except shoot down ppl less competent than you
No real rewards for combat vs the cost of engaging in it (~40k a ship to be competitive, destoryed often)
Strafe thrusters being too powerful leads to counterintuitive dogfights and you need a decent keyboard thatll let you hold down enough keys against better ppl (>3 keys at once)
Easy and boring to make money, but then theres nothing to do but lose it fighting people. Just adds an unwelcome work element to the whole thing.
It will be a great game, and I'll play it for sure if they solve any/all of the above. At the moment the levels of grief make it not really worth it imo.

Oh well. That's it. They got a sponsor somewhere to make a saleable game of it. So much for another fun free game... anyone got a replacement in mind?

This game is incredibly addictive and extremely fun, when I first found out about it I spent 8 hours strait playing it >=D
I'd gladly pay a monthly price for the game, *IF* they start implementing a real world into it. In my past experiences with the Vendetta test, it was purely about roaming around and fighting drone ships (and the occasional players) and got old fast.
Make it more interactive, with some real quests, better ship upgrades (that you don't lose so easily), and I'll gladly join. If they make it more of an MMORPG instead of a pumped-up version of Space Invaders, then it'll kick ass.

Is a price tag. Honestly, just put a paypal system up and start charging for monthley access to the servers. I was knocked out by the fact that these guys weren't charging a dime, when the game was plenty playable months ago. Stop whining about how great it'll be when the {capital ship|storyline|missions|new ai|balenced ship + whepons} comes along, and just start up a subscription. No one will blame you for it, and I mean with the number of players, you wouldn't need to charge all that much.
The other option is to to a mail sell from your office. Tux games would surley ship it, and just do postal orders. bundel a small one sector server with the client to allow for single player (aka Quake III) and for local net games et voila, you've got yourself some income. (+ I'd be doubly interested in that case since I've only got dialup internet).
Seriously, that's the best thing you could do (or if you don't want to continu, sell the code to the communautie, aka Blender, so you cover your debts, and your game still lives)

Though a test, quite playable and enjoyable. Get it, play it, and you'll never leave it.
Exactly right. Sell the bloody stuff and stop being divas. It's probably more than good enough for a realease and they just have to include bug fixes downloads until the next version.

I do not whant to sound like a Troll or a Zealot but, why should anyone donate money to a company that has a propietary product and wants to keep it that way in hopes of making a profit?
Yes it is cross platform (that is a good thing), yet they decided they wanted a buissiness. If their buissiness plan failed then thats their problem, after all that is the risks one assumes when starting a company.
Open the source a distribute freely like Parsec http://openparsec.sourceforge.net/ then I can consider donations, till then I'm sorry.

From the News page:
As many of you have noticed, we haven't been terribly forthcoming with our plans for the future, of late. This has been, in large part, because we haven't been sure if there was going to *be* much of a future for our company or our game. Some of you are aware that I personally have funded the company from its inception. I didn't have a huge amount of money to begin with, so we've learned to stretch our finances pretty far. We've survived for several years, building the game you've seen and looking for a publisher to fund us to completion. As of the beginning of this month, however, I am beyond broke. Ray and Waylon ceased to be paid their minimal-survival salaries at the beginning of the month. Ray has been looking for jobs, Waylon moved his computer home to save on gas and food costs. We've scrounged enough to keep the office for a short period of time, but our outlook is somewhat grim. There have been hopeful possibilities with publishers and the like, but none have panned out, and things have gotten to a pretty bad state for us.
Anyway, it was time to give you, our userbase, a heads-up about this. We aren't dead yet, but we may be soon. The game servers will not be going down immediately, but I'm not going to comment further on the post-demise possibilities for the game at the moment. That eventuality is still a little.. painful, at present.
Our thanks to everyone. OEMs have been very supportive. Matrox, ATI, Nvidia and Apple have all been wonderful to us. Websites like GameSpy, Penny Arcade, Inside Mac Games, Happy Penguin, FreshMeat and Linux Games have all helped us get the word out. Without them we would not have the great base of users that has evolved.
And as for our users, we thank you all for your encouragement and good will over the period of the Vendetta Test. Some of you even asked that we make donations possible, and have since made generous monetary contributions. People have offered to help us host the game, send us hardware, given us their time and ideas, all in the interest that our game might succeed. We are eternally grateful. It has been wonderful to experience so many people being so excited about our project. It's not been easy for any of us here, living on faith and laboring towards an uncertain future. But having a base of people so genuinely thrilled about our creation-in-progress has really made things a lot more positive. I.. wish we could have more fully delivered on all your hopes, as well as our own.
We will be talking with our families, considering our options, and meeting next monday to further decide the fate of our company. Until then, I remain,
John "Incarnate" Bergman
Managing Director
Guild Software, Inc.
As you can see, Guild Software needs your help, your donations. So go sign up and click that little "Donations" button.
I agree. Wondeful, fun game, lots of potential. It will be a loss when it goes commercial and I can no longer play it.
Why will I be no longer able to play it? One main reason. Not only will they charge you $60-80 just to get a copy of it, they will then charge you an extra $10-20 for every month you wish you play.
This is rediculous. No game is worth the amount of money they expect to make off of it with their monthly fee's. Especially when they, although in very nice words, say they will not ever make a stand-alone server.
You can believe they'll make a standalone if you want, but just look at all the other games online currently. Everything with a subscription fee ends up being, our server only. And 3rd party hacks and creations.

I create my accaunt but I still cant download the game, why?
The Test is open to the general public. As an MMORPG engine, the game requires an account to be made, which grants access to both the website and, once installed, the game itself. The account is used, server-side, to store all the user's character data and other information. There is a hard upper limit on the total number of public Test accounts that are available. However, accounts that are deemed "very inactive" are purged on a regular basis, and there are usually a number of account slots open at any given time.
To obtain the game, first create an account, by clicking the link below. This will take to you the Vendetta Test website. Once you have created your account, use your new login and password to login to the website, and select the Download option on the left. This will allow you to download a small program called the Vendetta Updater. Once installed, the Updater will then download the rest of the game, as well as keeping your copy of the game up to date with the latest patches as the development moves forward.
You wont be able to play it? If i you like it so much, why wouldnt you buy it?

The only dissapointing thing about this game is the fact that someday it will go commercial and then I won't be able to play it. In every other way it has surpassed my expectations. The graphics are stunning and run well.
What was the error message? It worked fine for me (although I don't know why they need to make this installer, after all, it just puts /usr/local/bin/vendetta on the system and I could have done this myself...

Tried it under Linux:
- the installer looks very cheap and crappy.
- The install takes a while, even with DSL since it downloads 26 MB.
- You can only download the game if you submit a lot of personal information - yuck!
- Installer's help button won't work - it tries to start Netscape (minor :)
+ The game grafics look top (at least what I see on startup :o)
- no sound so far (problem on my system)
+ multiplatform: windows, max _and_ linux
+ the guys making it seem very competent
I like space games, so now I need a way t figure out how I can connect my joystick to my new system - it doesn't have a game port (or soundcard, only build-in) at all. And here I thought I would never need my old joystick again and was about to toss it into the garbage a month ago...
yeah, that was their mistake on the compile. It was fixed very rapidly. If you ever run into one of those, try to get to #vendetta on irc.slashnet.org and tell the devs.
Sector 17 can be accessed by going to the asteroid across from the station in 11, putting the station behind you and boosting for ahwhile. Sector 18 is off of 17 and can be accessed by lining up the two mined out "holey" roids and boosting along that line in the direction of the gate. Watch out going to 18, though. The bots in 17 are rather tricky these days. If ya need any other help, just look for me ingame. :)
The test is actually just a CTF game with trading thrown in and some other random stuff as well. It's a lot of fun, but currently somewhat lacking in RPG elements. That should begin to change as 3.3 and 3.4 come along, as the developers have an event and mission system planned for those releases, as well as improved AI.
You may have toggled physics models inadvertently. Check your keyboard bindings as it's possible to bind a key to toggle modes (I'm pretty sure there's a default key for it, maybe single-quote). The slippery mode is "Physics", you're probably looking for "Arcade".

and new bots have made it even better. It is a mission to get to sectors 17 and 18, hopefully it will deter people from having special ships all the time

Why is it that every now and then, my ship drifts out of control? No keyboard toggling turns it off...and I loose another ship -- even after repairs. Am I missing something? Did I turn on a toggle I'm not aware of?
I've found 14, 15 and 16, but not 17+18 yet:
14: Go to the center of the asteroid field in sector 8, head for the sun and keep turboing
15: Go to the last white asteroid in sector 10, line up so the warp to sector 11 is exactly behind you and travel in a straight line for 10k or such
16: From 15: Go to the station, rotate in a way so you're horizontal with the horseshoe shaped asteroid field, rotate sideways so 10 is in the far left of the front radar, boost away for a while.
16: From 5: At the station, line up in such a way that the 9 warp and the station are aligned in a straight line and turbo.
Steven.
I guess that's a pretty common thing with ORPG's, hacking away for that dollar, then someone blows you up.

To me, the vendetta installer "vendetta-linux-installer.sh" comes as 149k file (they tell 52k), messed up with binary, and stopping execution with an error message.. I downloaded three times and always got the same mess. - Anybody else?
That was an accident. It's linked against glibc2.2 again now.

Previous versions worked fine on my glibc 2.2 system. Does vendetta use glibc 2.3 system calls now?

Now that Version 3.2 has been released, this game far surpasses any competition on any of the three available platforms. It' s active user base, attentive developers, advanced graphics and intuitive gameplay make it one of the best games I've ever played. With more than 14 sectors to play in, a persistant universe, more than a half-dozen highly detailed ships available to everyone (not to mention the special ships) and weapons for all tastes, you really can't beat it. Installs smoothly on every Linux system I've tried and plays well over any connection speed. This game I highly reccommend to any Linux, Windows or Mac OS X gamers that happen to read my little review. Enjoy your fragging!

this reminds me a lot of wing commander. the graphics are excellent. unfortunately, it is somewhat difficult to buy the next level ship if you constantly get destroyed by certain players. the most basic ship can is slow, has little armor, has little fire power. you'll be stuck ferrying goods back and forth for a while until you get a certain amount of money where you can buy yourself a better ship.

This game really has good graphics and sounds, and looks quite well but somehow it just doesn't make fun. The Problem is, that you can't see the differences between AI players and real players. Further the area is too huge, so if just few players are online, you won't find them. Another fact, that decreases the fun is, that you save money for a new gadget (p.e. by boringly trading with goods between stations which are seperated by an endless distance without any player, not even AI) and then you get killed and you have nothing left. But I still give it 3 stars for the nice graphics ;-)

It's not too much like Vegastrike, though. If you pump up the graphics, it's WAY better. Have you seen the asteroids? They've each got more polys than all of vegastrike. And the new features... *drool*. If you haven't joined, look into it. It's the best way I know of to completely forget that the real world exists.
I'm sure they are well aware of these 'faults', but if you care to read the information you'll discover that they're currently just testing the network elemnts of the game, and that this isn't meant to even be representative of the finished game. I'm sure tweaking costs and availability will be done once they've sorted out the (somewhat crucial) networking side of things.

This is quite simply the best game I've played for Linux. I'll admit it's addicted me a little, and I scrounge for my #17 ranking. :-) But, nonetheless, it has a very active community, with its good and its bad. The engine itself is amazing for a tri-platform game. Latency has not been a problem for me, and gameplay itself, well, let's just say that it's WAY better than other such games. I encourage you all to take a look,

Although it's just a beta or an engine test it works great and it's already pretty addictive. So imagine how can this end up if they implement missions, navigation map nad stuff similar to make a Whole Universe yet partially to be discovered.
This game is a must.... I wish it becomes GPL Licensed.
I know, I should have said Privateer. But anyway its a MMORPG thats about as deep as a puddle. Make the best equipent harder to get (and destroy) thus giving the game emersiveness and incentive. Without that you can chop off the first M in MMORPG because not very many people will get sucked in.
My good man, its destined to be a MMORPG 8)
That makes it way better than some clone of some crappy game. 8)

First off, I was very impressed with the quality of this title in regards to control, graphics, artwork. Unfortunately I thought (and still think) that there isn't enough emersiveness and compelling motivation. Basically it is a decent clone of a wing commander type game, but provides no compelling story-line or motivation. I want to work to progress a story line or a character (a ship perhaps). Being able to earn enough credits to buy the best equipment and keep (or lose) that in under an hour cheepened the experience. There needs to be more to do and reasons for doing it; also don't make it easy. Ok, that said, I know it is a work toward a work in progress, and in *that* regard, I was blown away by this game's first steps toward fulfilling its great potential. Not there yet though.
BTW joystick is working now but in a very basic way only (3 axis only and I cannot configure acceleration to throttle-wheel, though it's detected). I hope, the work goes on on joystick code...
Oh yes, by the way... it runs if you disable DGI ... albiet, /very/ slowly :P

Anyone managed to get this running with a Matrox G400 on X 4.2.1 ? I get total keyboard/mouse lockups ( but the system still is running as I can SSH in and reboot it from another box ) either on the 2nd stage load up (just after you've picked your pilot) or as soon as you enter into the arena, or as soon as you exit a worm-hole. I'm running kernel 2.4.19. I've tried with various low-latency patches too ( just incase it was an interrupt starvation ).

There's no linux joystick support at the moment. It is on the list of things to do. If you have comments on the game, get an account and get on the message boards at vendetta.guildsoftware.com and ask/suggest improvements and changes you'd like to see. there is an Open source equivalent (at least one) called vega strike, http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/index.html
Its engine is well written, while its graphics need some tweak. However, if we want nice, free, open source games, then we have to spend our time on them.
It is not good if programmers have to make graphics too.
Most of the linux gamers has enough knowlege to help making better graphics for Open-source games.
And don't forget working on a game project is almost as fun as playing with them (if not even better ;)
