MatanzaFREE!
Matanza is a multiplayer game (with no hard-coded limit to the number of players) where each player has a ship and attempts to take down all others. All the animations are rendered to ASCII art using algorithms from AALib. The game is a telnet server, players need nothing other than a standard telnet client. Teams mode is supported. Known to work on BeOS, Windows, GNU/Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD.

A neat concept. I'm not sure I'd say it rocks, and in fact I never figured out how to quit except for dumping my telnet session (which coredumped the server after I'd done it a few times.) The ships look a little vague, and movement is somewhat choppy. Still, real-time telnet games have some possibilities.
