great game, but could someone tell me if it is possible to play this game with a joystick using windows xp?
i had to make a change in sar/gctl.c : add the line
" #include < stdio.h > "
at top. this fixed my error.

This would be a lot of fun if you could play it with a joystick. Unfortunately they use their own joystick wrapper (libjsw) and don't get it right. Even after running the configuration utility (jscalibrator) which reads the joystick just fine, the game itself can't read the stick correctly. It doesn't seem to read the .joystick file at all, the pitch axis is reversed and flipping it in jscalibrator has no effect in the game.
This problem exists in both the windows and linux versions.

I stumbled upon Search and Rescue for Linux, looking for some games for my Linux system.
Wow!
Awesome graphics and has the potential to be an awesome flight sim.
I can't wait to have some more missions and campaigns but free flight is great.
For the player who said that it stuffed up your ALSA settings, you need to shutdown the yiff server first.
I just tried playing mp3s with xmms and they were very low quality. Thats because of the conflict.
I then shutdown yiff (yshutdown) and they play normal.
Thanks Wolfpack!!!
Release some more missions and then sell the game in stores. I'll buy it!

This game is incredible...!! I hope it keeps developing, because it really promises to be an all-day-playing game! Until now there are only a couple of missions, and "free flight", but no campaing, even thoug it's worth it...
I loved flying the Osprey :-P

hi.
I just installed yiff ( to have sound ) and it totally messed with my alsa sound ;(..running yiffconfig left me with low audio volumne and I can fix :(
thx anyone
You need to install libxpm4-devel-3.4k-23mdk.i586.rpm from cd3.
I've successfully built it but it won't run. Wants me to tamper with my video settings. Might give it a try another time.

Apparently, the Voodoo3's lack of an alpha channel forces Mesa to drop to full CPU rendering, running at 2 spf. Either the Display Settings needs an uglify switch, or the whole game needs to be ported to more capable 3D hardware, like the Vectrex.

A very nice game. Only wish that I had A better PC. Oh well thats life.
Yesterday evening I gave it a try. Some three hours later I was still sitting in front of it, trying to accomplish the first mission. Good going! 5 stars to boost further development! :-)
Cheers, alex.
P.S.: I managed to accomplish the first mission, in case you wonder... :-)

just sickening to see it but your game

There is not something "seriously wrong with the way the author is doing OpenGL". If something is wrong with openGL it is likely to be because you have not set it up properly.

Theres something seriously wrong with the way the author is doing OpenGL in this game, it refuses to use the 3D hardware.
Later XFree 4.0.2 version refuses to work at all. (with a segfault in debug mode) I had a go at fixing it, but its too complex for me :( - something gets messed up in the gl pipeline.
With that said, it has incredible potential, the idea is brilliant.

From authors: As stated in the README,
the game is schedualed to be free
after the alpha release.
As of beta release 0.2, Search and Rescue is GPL and as thus redistribution is allowed.
If you have any further questions you may contact the authors, see

I can't rate this because currently is absolutely non-free... there's not even
a license in the tarball (and they say so in the README)
So... passing it on is a no-no (README says to not resdistrib)
I hope it will have a decent Free Software license when they feel it is ready.

This game is coming along alright. I can see a lot of detail has gone into the different aspects. I feel that the flight controls and Graphics need some work...but hey its a cool Linux game. I just wish he would put this on sourceforge and let it get passed around to some devolpers.
