Penguin CommandFREE!
This is a clone of the classic "Missile Command" Game, but it has better graphics and music. You have to defend cities by shooting at missiles, smartbombs and Flyers.

I'd love to play this game, but when I try to run it, I get:
"Couldn't load /usr/local/share/penguin-command/gfx/abc.png: Unsupported image format"
I'm running Slackware 10.2 with the 2.6.13 kernel.
Any ideas?

Nothing to add to what previous posters have said - everything is very well executed in this game and it is easy to compile, install, and modify. It's only missiles falling out of the sky, though, so 4 stars is my rating.

This game is excellent. Just one thing though. Would it be possible to have the bombers that approach from the left side of the screen to also enter from the right? The lack of bombers from the right unbalances the game as your left launcher runs out of missiles, and the right is too far away to be meaningful. Again, this game is excellent.

This is a great Missile Command remake.
I was even able to change the cities to igloos and the guns are aimed by penguins.
I was able to edit the image files easily.

BTW.: If you don't have root access, you can run Penguin Command on every Linux system without installation by 0install (all dependencies will be dowloaded automatically and won't overwrite libraries on your system). A 0install interface for Penguin Command is available at http://people.freenet.de/LinuxCNC/0install/penguin-command , all you need to start Penguin Command *without* installation is the 50kb 0install Python script from http://0install.org/injector.html . Any feedbacks are welcome... ;)

For those who like killing things with mouse coordination, music, and clicking for explosions -- it's not bad. This game is fun even if you're not a big fan of stopping every nuke sent at you. Maybe there should be a retaliation attack force to stop whoever is wilfully sending missles at you. ;)

I really like the functionality and the ability to use all 3 buttons of my mouse to fire from all 3 cannons. I also like that I was able to customise the graphics (I changed the cities to Igloos and the guns to Penguins)

Spectacular version of Missle Command. The game gets pretty hard, so if ya not all that good at the original, you'll be overwhelmed quickly. :P

I do not understand the rating of Mr. Jenner below. This game is great! Of course, I don't play it for hours but that's not the point of an arcade game, I guess. The point is to play it from time to time to distract yourself and relax a bit and Penguin Command definitely does a good job with this!

A rather good implementation, the graphics are smooth and nicely polished, and it doesn't take eight processors to run. I do agree that the progression of difficulty seems a bit off -- one wave I haven't been touched, and then the next I get completely anhilitied.

Great Game! The Original Missle Command
can be run in X11 with the XMAME project,
but the mouse just doesn't work well
enough. This game works and adds
some novelty.

The problem is a bug in the SuSE 6.2. I'll have a work around in the next version.
For those who can't wait:
1.change line 64 in configure.in to: LIBS="$SDL_LIBS -ljpeg -lpng -Lmixer $SOUND"LIBS="$SDL_LIBS -ljpeg -lpng -lz
-Lmixer $SOUND"
2.run autoconf
That's it!

I had the same problem as Peter with building this package - it claimed that I had no libpng installed - when in fact I do. (I also have SuSE 6.2)
The problem is that libpng requires the zlib compression library - which configure does not attempt to link to.
Also. the second argument of AC_CHECK_LIB should be the name of a function inside the library - not 'main'!
I commented out the test for libpng in configure.in - ran autoconf and then the resulting configure script ran - but then the build died in IMH.h.
So, I'll pass this onto the author and give up. :-(

Incredible! The graphics and sound are beautiful, especially the music, and I've yet to find a bug in the game. This is another excellent example of what can be achieved in open source games.

Configure doesn't work. it claims:
checking for main in -lpng... no
configure: error: Your system is missing libpng!
yet my suse 6.2 system does have the library. there was an sdl library with this bug -- sdlimage i think it was called? i hate hacking autoconfed makefiles. they're really hard to understand! :(
oh well.

Nice game! Far more difficult to
play than the original version, since you have to use/coordinate your three
missile silos with your mouse buttons.
The shots could be a bit faster, though.
