Game Sheet: INSTEAD

Using INSTEAD you can create and play your own games that could classified as a mix of visual novels, text quests and classical 90'ss quests.

    The STEAD features:
  • simple story source code (LUA based script);
  • gui and text (readline) interfaces;
  • gui interface supports music and pictures;
  • theme support;
  • portability (initially the game has been written under Linux and depends on SDL and lua).

Nice idea, because I feel like we've really lost those games, although it seems to me that even if we have good tools like that, what will be really missing is people willing to make games in them. I hope I'm wrong, and good luck with the project :)

Yo can remove -D_HAVE_ICONV from makefile(s) to disable linking with iconv or (i hope) add -liconv to CFLAGS to build it in MacOS X.

It's strange. Game was succsessfully build on linux/windows/free bsd/... I have no idea, what happens. May be something wrong with the build system (wrong lua version, or something like that...) You may also try -nosound option. And try run game under gdb. :)

instead-cat_en1.2 starts in english but when get inside institute is all in russian!! Fix this! it was getting entertaining

INSTEAD uses SDL for gfx and sound. So, the certain sound and gfx backands depends on your SDL build. Have you any sucsessful experience of building SDL games in your system?

i have not build sdl applications on this machine for a while, so i cannot say, i either use fink or port and it has been working great for everything else.

What are the advantages of this over, say, Inform 7 or TADS? Just LUA?

The evolution of adventure game systems seems to have steadily trended towards domain-specific languages over the past fifteen years, as general-purpose languages aren't well-suited to the task.

It is not a parser engine... :) INSTEAD is like _very_ simple parser engine + SDL gui. Here is screenshots:

You can get english version, there is russian text in part 2 and 3. The first part is already translated.

That's what I'm saying, you said you needed перевод for pts 2 and 3, I'm giving it a shot. Just started though. So far part 2 seems pretty funny, stealing alien clothes and machine guns behind the institute. Maybe it wouldn't seem as funny if I'd actually played through part 1, but I get a kick out of it.

I see two paths in your build log: -L/opt/local/lib and -L/sw/lib. It's like that you are using somewhat mixed build. This may be problem. We did build in mac os x with fink, but currently i have no access to mac os x machine to make build for you. :(

ok i accomplished to build it, i removed darwinports (moved to another location just during the build) and it compiled, but i still get that error: 2010-03-29 19:29:02.357 sdl-instead[95401:10b] *** _NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x4445050 of class _NSCallStackArray autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking which floods my terminal :/
