A great port of a great game. Great graphics, even if you dont have a 3D card. The sound is great. I would give this game 4.5 stars. The only problem with this game is the installation, which starts graphical then drops you into the terminal to do it all over again, but its a minor flaw.

A nice way to tide us over till the arrival of the likes of Quake 3 and Heavy Gear II. Some little issues with the install but other than that its pretty nice. Definitely grab yourself a voodoo, g400 or tnt. Its quite a ride!

Truly awesome... Kinda like having Tomb Raider under Linux, but actually playable and fun. ;-) The graphics are wonderful in software and hardware rendering, and the gameplay is slick. If you like adventure/action games, Heretic II is a great way to go.

This game rox, I hated video games until I bought this one (I bought it because I could get it for $10 with the purchase of another piece of software). Rock on Loki.

Although this game had commercial success unfortunately I found neither the game play nor the graphics worth keeping the demo let alone buying the game. Avoid this.

Seems to have stability problems (segfaulting), but good graphics and sound. I'm more of a racer, but probably worth a test if you like walk-around-and-do-things games.

Excellent graphics and sound. Story line is great too. Lots of available cheats! One of the best games I've played this year. Demo was good (download the newest patch for joystick support) but visit your local Electronics Boutique and buy the full version. Cost me about $10 bucks.

Great game, worth playing for every 3PS and "Fantasy-Shooter" fan. A little bit too short anyway.

For some reason the installer does not seem to be able to find the CD Rom drive when it is mounted using supermount. What I had to do was remove the line from my /etc/fstab (obviously make a backup of the orifinal first) for the cd-rom drive and then restart the computer (I tried unmounting the CD-drive and using one of the command line options for supermount to stop it from supermounting, but only a restart would do it). Then I mounted the CD rom drive manually. Just mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom will probably work in most cases and mount will work the rest out for itself. Then I was able to run the install. After the install completes, then you may want to set the fstab file back to the way it was, or you may want to edit it so that it no longer uses supermount. Somehow supermount seems to break whatever method that the loki installer uses to detect the CD it needs. There really should be some method to tell it where the CD is mounted.
The game will surely not run right after the install, however. What you will need to do next is install all the updates. I found that, to get it to work, I had to install all the updates in order one by one starting with 1.06a through to 1.06c. If you do them out of order, you will get an error about being unable to create or find a delta for some file. The last two updates are available from:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/lokigames/updates/heretic2/
The loki website links to:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/lokigames/updates
the trouble is that it contains an index.html, which means that you cannot browse a directory listing in some web browsers so you have to use anonymous ftp. The missing first patch is at:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/lokigames/patches/heretic2/
I am pretty sure you do not want the dynamic one. I actually got my copy somewhere else, but I don't have the url at hand and this should be the same one.
All the patches should run with:
sh patchname
I cannot remember offhand whether or not those patches worked for me right off the bat or if I had to use the trick of updating the version of loki_patch inside the update files. If you try to run the files and they give you an error about update.sh --verify or something similar, then you will have to do the following:
run the patch with:
sh patchname --keep --target dirname where patchname is the name of the patch and dirname is the name of a directory you want created that will contain the files from the patch (NOTE: sometimes it is -keep instead of --keep). After running the command, go into the folder dirname and open the subfolder bin, then descend down a few levels (I think the only place you have a choice of what directory to descend into the choices are bsd and linux, choose linux, obviously) into the folder containing loki_patch. Replace it with a copy from:
http://icculus.org/%7Emsphil/loki/x86/
or go to icculus.org and get the code to compile your own copy. Once you have replaced loki_patch, go back to the dirname directory and run:
sh update.sh
that should install the update and you can repeat for the other two updates and also for the maps update if you want. After doing all that, you should be able to run heretic2.

Hello, My CD was collecting dust and I thought I'd give it a new life on my new machine (amd x86-64).

The game installs fine, runs fine in 32bits compatibility mode (Mandriva 2006 x86-64).

But I've got but one problem : when I patch the game with the french conversion (i'm french...), the game won'r run in french, but stays in english.

Any valuable help somewhere ?
