Game Sheet: Abuse
(from the original archive of "The Linux Game Tome")

Description: This is a 2D platform game with a dark, gritty feel. The lighting is beautiful and the character animation is very realistic. This is the shareware version, and only comes with a few levels. Multiplayer (IPX or TCP/IP) is supposedly supported in version 1.1.0, but wasn't available in the version I tested (0.3.2).

This is a beautiful game with wonderful graphics and sound. I just wish I enjoyed side-scrollers...

Very cool, especially if you're tired of all those first-person games that are a dime a dozen these days. Play it.

I have made a (S)RPM for RedHat (and other RPM based systems), which builds Abuse completely from the sources. Email me for more info.

Excellent game... take some time to dive through the source if you have a chance, some amazing concepts in there. It's a shame they never took this game very far.

Hmmm, just like another commenter, I get: "X windows screen type not supported" I've futzed with the colour depth settings within Xconfigurator with no results. I haven't yet grabbed the source code so maybe there's a chance I can get it going from there. Any other ideas? -MV

Nice game -- mouse doesn't work in SVGA and X has to be restarted at 8bbp, but oh well..

I tried the version 2.0 that is currently in Debian2.2(potato), and it still needs X to be at 8 bpp and 640x480, and even then it only runs in a window at 320x200 or so. I couldn't get it running with svgalib, but I didn't really try that hard. But still, graphics and sound are fine, and if could get recoded to 16 bpp and fullscreen(at least 640x480) then I'd say this game has a future.

I compiled and installed the source RPM on my RedHat 6 but abuse prints the following message and does nothing else: "Added himem block (3072000 bytes) Memory available : 3071864 Abuse (Version 2.00)" (both for SVGA and X11R6)

Abuse is really great and scary in the right way... and the addons really look cool, but where am I supposed to get the full game? The shareware (or demo, if you want) version is very short... any ideas?

I would have tried it but none of the download links worked.

This game rules, 'nuff said. BTW, I highly recommend you get the SDL version of Abuse if you can't get the "official" version to work under X. Abuse-SDL works great for me, haven't had any problems with it yet.

A fantastic game! But... how do I get past the flying robots with flame throwers in the big room at the start of level 10? I'm stumped.

It's a great game, but it's simply incompatible with modern Linux systems. I'm giving this version 1 star because it's basically impossible to run. Fortunately all is not lost. Abuse has been updated to use the SDL and runs great! Get Abuse-SDL to see this great game. (The SDL version is 5 stars)

Definitely try abuse-SDL (also listed on Game Tome) now. I am downgrading this to 2 stars based on how much better abuse-SDL is.

For a RPM Download Link that WORKS here you go: Fedora 7 users just type "yum install abuse" into the root terminal

Could someone help me mod Abuse so that the first gun (laser) is made into a Gravity Gun? I have the code for a gravity sensor (changes gravity in a limited range).
