Game Sheet: World of Padman
(from the original archive of "The Linux Game Tome")

World of Padman was a popular total conversation mod for the Quake 3 engine.
Since the release of the GPL'ed source code, their team members have worked hard to brush up the maps, models and the whole bunch of other things that belong to a superior mod. They Invented new weapons, gaming goals and so on.

The stand-alone game based on the ioquake3 source code is a fun shooter at its best! Come and try it for free, you have nothing to invest but your download time.
The game comes absolutly free as in beer. For details for the copyrighted graphics read at the project site.

Looks really cool. Maybe it'll take off much like Tremulous did when the standalone came out. Looks like it took a lot of work ...

"Source available: yes. .. free as beer..." Do you mean free as speech? :-) (downloading... I hope the prebuilt binary will run on Mandriva x86_64...)

The source will be aviable and it will compile, if they know what they are doing. The graphics and such things are archetecturally independant and it shouldn't matter what distro, platform or OS your running. It's like the original Quake3 game. I can compile it to run on my PowerPC Linux machine, and then use the artwork (aka *.pak) files from ID to play it. It would be nice, though, if these modders could get over themselves for a second and realise a lot is to be gained with working with other Quake3-related projects.

It's funny, it looks good, it's based on GPL Code. I recommend this Games to everyone.

Data: Free as beer

Alltogether this makes the game free as beer

The artwork and the actual mod and such is basicly 'closed source', meaning you can't realy use it for anything other then playing their mod. It's not a violation of the GPL license or anything like that, so don't mistake what I am saying.

I can understand that to a certain extent. A: it's their stuff so they are well within their rights to do as they please with it, and B: it's artwork and doesn't collaborate like software does. However there are quite a few other modifications that make a lot of artwork. If they team up then you'd probably be able to do intesting things with exchanging models and such things.

Good game, very fun and look good. Good balancing between snipe and fast shooting.
Date: 2007-04-03 20:17:21     User: anonymous     Subject: GPL please.
I wish the maps, modles, and textures were GPLd like Nexuiz is. GPL everything is good. (Yes I am an artist that GPLs or BSDs his artwork).
Date: 2007-04-04 10:34:46     User: anonymous     Subject: Really Good!
Also different then other mods and just be good in shooting isn't enough, really fun (except the moments another shoots you and takes the bonus just that second before your in to draw). Really a recommendation to try this one.
Date: 2007-04-05 12:20:26     User: Irrevenant     Subject: Better description please.
It would be nice if the description described what the mod actually does. All I know from the description is that it's a mod of Quake 2 and that you think it's really good.
Date: 2007-04-05 13:04:10     User: Rogue Jedi X     Subject: Re: Better description please.
Quake 3, actually. Anyway, it's a standalone mod with extremely colourful graphics. Think vicious Smurfs (as another poster so eloquently put it) with weapons that look a lot like squirt and Nerf guns, played in enlarged everyday locations like kitchens, living rooms, basements, etc., much like Micro Machines.
Date: 2007-04-05 23:04:47     User: wh1sper     Subject: Memory requirement
Sorry, but my annotation about memory requirement was by far to large. The game actually needs 128 MByte for itself. So a 256 MB computer should be enough. Gameplay: This game is VERY fast! But for those that are not very common with it, the game servers where setup a little bit slower. This is a testing phase not even clear if or how long this takes. Easter Celebration hint! After installing, there is a folder named extra there you find images for producing dvd-boxes. So you can print a beautiful cover and have a gift for someone... (hope my english is understandable...)
Date: 2007-04-07 07:13:12     User: kempelen     Subject: Re: GPL please.

Would that make it possible to be on Mandriva install DVD (or the FTP servers, due to large size)? I think that would be quite cool, if the Linux distros could include this 500MB masterpiece. :-) Really cool games are rare in the distro, maybe due to the limitations on graphics license. (Personally I don't do GPLd GFX, but I make some GPLd code.) Keep up the good work!

Local server mode crashes on my Mandriva x86_64. (Sig 11) I'll try to build when src is out.

when I want to play this game I need to preload the on my Slackware 11.0 distribution, otherwise there is a message from Init_QGL saying it isn't able to load with the utterly cryptic "failed"
    export LD_PRELOAD
placed just in the shell script WoP does the trick:
   test -x ./wop-engine.$arch || continue
       export LD_PRELOAD
   exec ./wop-engine.$arch "[email protected]"
I rate it a mere 4 stars because Single player mode does not work, excellent game though

I'm a laid-back gamer who isn't very skillful but still plays games for fun, and I prefer my FPSes to be as simple and mindless as possible, more Quake 3 than Counterstrike. Hence, this game is just what the doctor ordered. It's got excellent production values, much better than the typical free game offering. The feel of the game is much more wacky than what I'm used to see in this genre, and so it feel refreshingly different than the testosterone-laden, futuristic sci-fi offerings we usually see.

I think this game will pass very well with women and younger children who are looking for a fun action game, in addition to the usual male public. Spread the word!

Best of all, it's FREE!
Date: 2007-04-10 08:12:36     User: Irritant     Subject: Re: World of Padman
I think mods should use their own art, and get a style that is their own, just like this one did. The one thing that brings down alot of free games in this genre is lack of consistent style and artwork. So it's nice to see a well packaged game like this, and I'd truly hate to see it's art dispersed amongst other games, which IMO would lessen the impact that the art in this game has as a complete collection.
Date: 2007-04-10 11:56:49     User: anonymous     Subject: Get the standalone version... won't regret it. It's FUN and the production values are pretty close to what you'd expect from a commercial game.

Wasted a few nights playing this already. Colourful, fast, funny, and well-balanced weaponry make for a very fun game (loading times on my P4 3GHz are quite slow - especially compared to Q3A).

Nice graphics and design, but the gameplay is just a bad version of q3... nice to look at, but ultimately boring to play IMHO.
Date: 2008-03-17 18:06:37     User: anonymous     Subject: nice but didn't like characters
The graphics are nice, but in the end, it's just another good FPS for Linux. I like the concept of cartoon based graphics, however, I didn't like the characters. Padman is just a so so FPS game wrapped in nice eye candy. The world graphics are great, but the models are just too goofy for my tastes. Keep in mind that I think the models in Alien Arena suck too. Of all the FPS games for Linux, WarSow characters are the worse. So given the competition, it's not bad. I tried the game for about a day, then removed it from my hard drive (WarSow only lasted 5 minutes). I wish there was a project built on WolfET (the free one). Of all the "free to play" FPS games available for Linux, I still think WolfET has the best entertainment value. But that's just me.
