Game Sheet: Warsow
(from the original archive of "The Linux Game Tome")
Set in a futuristic cartoon-like world where rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks roam the streets, Warsow is a completely free fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Speed and movement, that’s what Warsow is all about. Like a true cyberathlete you jump, dash, dodge and walljump your way through the game. Grab those power-ups before your enemy does, plant the bomb before anyone sees you, and steal the enemy’s flag before anyone knows what’s going on! A handful of popular gametypes come shipped with Warsow, like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Clan Arena, Instagib and Duel. Warsow invites you to add to this list, by creating your own custom gametypes with the brand new gametype scripting system!

1. General concept * Standalone game for Windows and Linux under GPL ;
Date: 2005-08-28 12:04:51 User: anonymous Subject: This is not free
This is not free as in free software. Please, dear Happy Penguin people, please differentiate between "free of charge" and "free software" in your database.
The data is explicitly not GPLed (see the forums, they don't mention the license at all) and if you download the "full linux tarball" is does only include binaries and no source.
Date: 2005-08-28 14:03:00 User: anonymous Subject: Re: licence is GPL
I doesn't seem so to me:
I also couldn't find anywhere an URL to download the source code of the engine, which is a must if they're using GPL (and they must use GPL as the game is a Quake2 derivative).
Date: 2005-08-28 14:09:12 User: anonymous Subject: Re: This is not free
from the forums: http://www.warsow.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8077 The GPL does not require that the source code be provided with the package, simply that it be made available apon request. The GPL has no rules as to what terms the data files are distributed under, though they also apear to be GPL.
Date: 2005-08-28 22:17:26 User: anonymous Subject: Re: licence is GPL
No, they only have to provide it to you if (a) you download the binary from them and (b) you request the source from them. If you requested the source from them, and they didn't provide it, then you are correct that they are violating the GPL. Now, not providing a download of the source may not be a very *nice* thing to do, but they are perfectly within their rights to do so.

Quickly skipping over the people claiming this game isn't GPL (It IS!), I just have to say that this game is really really fun! If you enjoy(-ed) Quake 3 and/or Unreal Tournament then give it a go - you won't regret it.
Date: 2005-08-29 13:25:34 User: bigfatdude Subject: looks good
The engine looks very nice, I like the unique style of graphics. It wasn't playable though? Was it supposed to be? All I could do was move around (as in flying, not limited by walls) and I couldn't pick up weapons or fire them.
Date: 2005-08-29 14:06:37 User: anonymous Subject: Re: licence is GPL
Not very nice, and perhaps not very wise if they get a lot of requests for the source code.
Date: 2005-08-30 11:16:26 User: anonymous Subject: Re: looks good
This is because you have to join a team after connecting to a server. Press escape, select console, type "/join". Most of the time I get an error message "Red team is full." when attempting to join a game but every now and then it works.
In my opinion, the game would be a LOT more fun if players automatically joined instead of starting in spectator mode.
Date: 2005-08-31 10:58:08 User: anonymous Subject: Re: looks good
Instead of the workaround provided by entering /join in the console, you could simply press F3 ;)
But I agree, autojoin would be a nice feature...
As a quick note: the double walljumps as shown in the screenshots on their site are disabled in normal gamemodes and restricted to just one. To enable the second walljump start a server in "race" mode. Have a look at the homepages screenshots and browse their forums for demo files recorded ingame to get a feeling for the great degree of freedom this movement provides. It's by far more than fragging to this shooter.
Date: 2005-09-01 21:02:33 User: anonymous Subject: Re: This is not free
This applies to them:
b) Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give any third party, for a charge no more than your cost of physically performing source distribution, a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange; or,
If there is no offer included in the software package (or heck, if the GPL itself isn't included), then the license is broken. If there is, all is well.

Realy nice game! The game has a realy unique feeling, and the graphics are awesome! Well done! Add some more maps and you'll get my five stars!

Some people may not like the whole cellshading-look, but actually this game is just LOTS of fun if you like ego-shooters. Happy Fragging. *fomp* :)

What the hell is an ego-shooter? "Oh no! Jean-paul Sartre just got the rocket launcher! Gotta run or he'll blast my subconscious to smithereens!"

Date: 2005-10-26 11:21:40 User: anonymous Subject: Re: licence is GPL
So, let's all write them an e-mail and ask for the sources... This is the best way to have the programmer put up a download link, isn't it?

Hmm. I like my idea better.
Date: 2005-10-27 09:36:00 User: anonymous Subject: Warsow in Debian
I couldn't run Warsow in Debian (sarge) becuase it couldnt load libXxf86dga.so.1. The file isn't available
in any package, but libXxf86dga.a is provided in xlibs-static-dev. This is a workaround:
ld --whole-archive -shared -o libXxf86dga.so.1 libXxf86dga.a
ln -s libXxf86dga.so.1 libXxf86dga.so
repeat for libXxf86vm.so.1 or any other libXxf86* that warsow may ask for

Excellent game! Fast paced, dynamic and with interesting graphics. I have to admit, that the most "cartoonish" levels looked the best imho and the team should go in that direction in order to keep things more cohesive. I suggested it to my friends also. Keep up the good work :)

Love the walljumping.
Date: 2006-06-19 06:34:21 User: Irritant Subject: Excellent game!
I really love this game, and I agree with those who said you should stick to the more cartoonish levels cohesiveness, but overall it's very fun, especially once you get the hang of trick jumping.
Date: 2006-06-19 08:22:02 User: Pxtl Subject: Damn good
Played it, had some awsome fun. It's really hard though. However, I have some comments: Rocketlauncher and Electrovolt seem substantially better than the other weapons. Second, the race mode doesn't seem to work. Third, there is no up-to-date instruction manual.
Also, is there any way to get a conventional DM without a warm-up time and game-locking going? Just like a regular Quake server?
Date: 2006-06-20 00:34:48 User: kerm Subject: Fun FPS.
The action is really fast in this game. It's certaintly a quality game and the moves you can make are great. I really like the newer maps as they are really conducive to stunt jumping. Make sure to try it if you like quick deathmatch sessions. The game has improved greatly over the last year.
Date: 2006-06-30 11:51:21 User: anonymous Subject: Re: licence is GPL
well i tried it (about 20 hours) and its damn shitty compared to Cube or Nexuiz for example
Date: 2006-07-02 20:12:57 User: anonymous Subject: Good concept.
Good concept for a game, but unless you have some background with trick jumping in Quake, it could be difficult getting started.

Nice and smooth, and the graphics are really sharp and original.

Not open-source, but there's Team Combat Elite, a mod for Enemy Territory.
Date: 2006-09-21 10:03:04 User: anonymous Subject: Beeeeeautiful.
The game itself is wonderfully fun. Instagib CTF servers are a riot. Running on a 2.6.17 kernel here with open-source radeon drivers and this game works *beautifully*. Note that the precompiled binaries don't work on many machines, as they're dynamically linked against specific versions of various different kerberos-related libraries - to fix this, download the SDK, unzip (anywhere will do), go into the source/ directory and run make. The game's makefile is, by the by, a work of art. Compilation doesn't take very long (I barely had time to make a cup of tea while it compiled on a Duron) and then simply overwrite the various files in the directory where warsow is installed with the newly compiled equivalents in the source/release/ directory.
Date: 2006-09-27 02:41:06 User: DD Subject: Re: Warsow
It's called True Combat: Elite, www.truecombatelite.net and it's very very good (I play it all the time and prefer it to CS and CS:S now).
The new Warsow release is utterly unbelievable. Congratulations to the game's developers from a longstanding FPS lover, this beats every other open source Quake-style shooter around into a cocked hat.
Warsow is now 10x better than the last release I tried. Literally.
Date: 2006-10-22 08:14:06 User: Saftpackl Subject: Great game
I just played the normal deathmatches (that are great, as well), before, but the funniest things are the racing maps!
Date: 2006-10-31 13:44:36 User: anonymous Subject: Nice but..
Really nice trough I'd like to see animated weapons and more particles FX. Could be a great competitor to Quake and Unreal in lan party... I'd love to see enormous map, ie. outdoor, if it can be done. A domination or Onslaught style game could be awesome.
Date: 2006-11-02 09:34:56 User: anonymous Subject: Re: Damn good
The weapons balence, eh, iono. The riot gun and the blue gun-of-doom seem to be even scarier in non-incompetent (i.e. any bar my own) hands. It might be possible to alter the weapons balence with configuration files on the server. Race mode appears, at first, to not work simply because it's so insanely difficult. It's almost entirely made up of near-impossible trickjumping. For example, on the very first jump of the race-through-space map, it's neccesary to hit the dodge forward button and then bunnyjump a few hundred milliseconds afterwards to get enough height and velocity to make the jump without falling to your doom. The lack of an instruction manual, hrmmmm. There's the wiki, of course, but that could do with a lot of editing. I ought to go give a hand with that myself, come to think of it. Conventional DM? I don't know. It's not *that* inconvenient as-is though, surely?

I like this less than other multiplayer I have tried. I say so for one reason its a serious shooter. The screenshot does not do it justice its beautiful, everything from the menus to the game itself.

Downloaded it a few days ago on my office computer. I was never a huge fan of quake2, but the the visuals and game play great. At this point there are only a handful of maps and nobody on-line playing, but with more development this will be an amazing game. definitely should end up a candidate for GOTM with some community work on maps and some extra feature this would be something great.

True, it's rather difficult to get started with it, but it's very rewarding once you master the movement :) Coming from an UT-world this was hard to adapt to, but now I'm hooked (since 0.07x)
